Quick answer: Medical massage is a focused, goal-based massage for a specific problem. You don’t need a doctor’s referral or diagnosis, but bring one if you have it. Sessions run 30 to 120 minutes and usually come with a treatment plan. Veterans with an approved VA Community Care referral have no out-of-pocket cost, because we bill the VA directly.

What Is Medical Massage?

Medical massage is a massage built around one goal, like reducing pain, improving how a joint moves or getting back to an activity. Your therapist works on the problem area and the surrounding muscle groups that may be contributing, using the techniques that fit your condition. It usually comes with a treatment plan: a series of appointments, self-care to do at home and referrals to other providers if needed.

Goal One specific problem General tension and relaxation
Focus The problem area and the muscles around it The full body or a few areas

Do I Need a Doctor’s Referral?

No. You can book medical massage without a referral or diagnosis. If you have one, bring it to your first visit, since it helps your therapist plan your treatment. If you plan to ask your insurance for reimbursement, your plan may require a physician’s referral, so check with your insurer first.

What to Expect: Your Treatment Plan

  1. Intake: your therapist asks about your pain, your history, your goals and any diagnosis you have.
  2. Assessment: your therapist checks how the area moves and which muscles are involved.
  3. Focused treatment: hands-on work on the problem area and the muscles around it.
  4. Self-care: stretches or exercises to do at home between visits.
  5. Your plan: a recommended series of sessions, and referrals to chiropractic care, acupuncture or your doctor if that would help.

Medical Massage for Veterans: VA Community Care Provider Since 2018

Hand in Health has been a VA Community Care Provider for the Syracuse VA Medical Center since 2018. We’ve treated hundreds of local veterans for chronic and acute pain, and caring for the people who served is some of the most meaningful work we do.

How it works:

  1. Talk with your VA primary care provider about massage therapy for your pain.
  2. If your PCP approves it, the VA sends a Community Care referral to Hand in Health.
  3. We schedule your visits and bill the VA directly.
  4. For visits approved and referred by the VA, you have no out-of-pocket cost.

Your care is the same focused, goal-based medical massage every patient gets, with a treatment plan built around your goals and updates shared with your VA care team as needed. Questions about a referral? Call or text us and we’ll walk you through it.

Medical Massage FAQs

What is medical massage?

Medical massage is a focused, goal-based massage for a specific problem, like back pain, sciatica or tendonitis. Your therapist works on the problem area and the muscles around it, and usually builds a treatment plan with you.

Do I need a prescription or referral for medical massage?

No. You can book medical massage at Hand in Health without a referral or diagnosis. If you plan to seek insurance reimbursement, your plan may require a physician’s referral.

How is medical massage different from therapeutic massage?

A therapeutic massage eases general tension. Medical massage focuses on one problem and the muscles around it, and usually comes with a treatment plan, self-care and a series of sessions.

Does insurance cover medical massage?

Hand in Health is self pay for massage, with one exception: for veterans with an approved VA Community Care referral, we bill the VA directly. For everyone else, we provide superbills on request so you can submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement, and HSA and FSA cards are accepted.

How much does medical massage cost?

Medical massage uses standard massage pricing. A 60-minute session is $120. Sessions are $80 for 30 minutes, $100 for 45 minutes, $140 for 75 minutes, $155 for 90 minutes and $200 for 120 minutes.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on your condition, how long you’ve had it and your goals. After your first visit, your therapist recommends a treatment plan and a series of sessions to support your goals.

Can medical massage help sciatica?

It can. Medical massage eases tight muscles in the lower back, hips and glutes that can press on or irritate the sciatic nerve. If your pain may be coming from a disc, your therapist will recommend chiropractic care or a visit to your doctor.

Do you accept VA Community Care referrals for massage?

Yes. Hand in Health has been a VA Community Care Provider for the Syracuse VA Medical Center since 2018 and has treated hundreds of local veterans for chronic and acute pain. Talk with your VA primary care provider first. If they approve massage therapy, the VA sends us a referral.

Do veterans pay for medical massage with a VA referral?

For visits approved and referred by the VA, there is no out-of-pocket cost, because Hand in Health bills the VA directly. A referral from your VA primary care provider is required before your first visit.

Can I use my membership for medical massage?

Yes. Monthly Massage Membership credits cover medical massage.
